The subway car rattled, a metal beast digesting its human meal. A gaggle of teenagers, plugged into their own worlds, occupied a corner, their backpacks forming a makeshift wall. In the center of the mayhem, a man with a salt-and-pepper beard clutched a worn copy of “War and Peace.” Opposite him, a woman with bright pink hair furiously crocheted something that resembled a neon-colored octopus.
Suddenly, a loud “WHOA! Sweet shirt!” cut through the din. One of the teenagers, a lanky kid with perpetually surprised eyes, was pointing at a man struggling to keep his balance near the doors.
