A collective groan rippled through the immediate vicinity. Maria rolled her eyes. Some people, she thought, had entirely too much time on their hands. The bus lurched to a stop. “Next stop, 74th Street-Broadway!” the conductor announced, cutting through the obnoxious laughter. Thank God, Maria thought, grabbing her plantains and her toddler. Escape was near.
